North American developer of green hydrogen projects EverWind Fuels has secured $22.5 million in funding from the Canadian government to develop marine and shore-side infrastructure at its Point Tupper terminal in Nova Scotia as part of the green hydrogen and ammonia project.
The funding was awarded through Transport Canada’s Green Shipping Corridor Fund, a program that provides funding for projects that contribute to the establishment of green shipping corridors and the decarbonization of the marine sector along the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and Canada’s East and West Coasts.
EverWind’s green hydrogen and ammonia project in Point Tupper is said to be the first to have received environmental assessment approval in North America and complete the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase . It is part of EverWind’s larger initiative to develop an Atlantic Canadian green fuels hub.
The project will use PEM electrolyzers and ammonia synthesis technology from Casale S.A. to convert water from man-made Landrie Lake and energy primarily from newly-built wind farms, which are expected to be operational by the end of 2026, into green hydrogen and green ammonia.
The first phase is designed to produce approximately 240,000 tonnes per annum of green ammonia starting in 2025, then achieve the full 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) volume by 2026.
According to EverWind, the new funding will support critical marine and shore-side infrastructure development at the Point Tupper terminal.
This includes the enhancement of existing marine terminal infrastructure for green fuel handling, installation of a green ammonia loading arm, and development of green ammonia supply pipelines.
“This investment will accelerate the development of the EverWind’s Point Tupper green hydrogen and green ammonia project and position the Strait of Canso region as a vital hub for sustainable energy development while driving economic growth throughout Nova Scotia and as a transport hub for its sister project on the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland,” the company said.
EverWind added that the infrastructure supported by this funding will also help catalyze emissions reductions in the marine transportation sector and serve as a gateway for the movement of green fuels from Atlantic Canada to markets at home and abroad.
