Greece’s cable manufacturer Hellenic Cables, part of Cenergy Holdings, has tucked a new milestone under its belt with the certification of its dynamic power cable, rated at 66 kV, which is said to be designed for demanding floating offshore wind applications and anticipated to enable the electrification of offshore oil and gas platforms with floating renewable energy, unlocking cuts in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Given the Greek player’s core objective of becoming a true enabler of the energy transition, the firm has been developing dynamic cable solutions, with the certification of its dynamic power cable perceived to ensure adherence to the highest standards of quality and reliability, supporting floating offshore wind projects as the market forecast shows significant growth in the years ahead.
Furthermore, the certification of the firm’s 66 kV dynamic cable will support the electrical connection of offshore wind turbines in areas where traditional fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines cannot be installed. Aside from this, the dynamic cables will pave the way for the electrification of offshore platforms using power from floating renewable energy sources, thereby significantly reducing carbon footprints, according to Hellenic Cables.

The Greek player claims its dynamic power cable’s “robust construction and advanced materials” ensure optimal performance and longevity in challenging marine environments, as it meets several stringent standards and benchmarks, including CIGRE TB 862, CIGRE TB 623, CIGRE TB 490, CIGRE TB 722, IEC 63026, and IEC 60840.

Last month, the company got a turnkey contract with the Greek transmission system operator (TSO) for the submarine interconnection of the Ionian islands. Before this, Hellenic Cables inked a partnership agreement with Leading Light Wind, considered one of the largest offshore wind farms in the United States, for inter-array cables.
The Greek firm was also among the players that joined hands to undertake the FlatEMF project, a laboratory study investigating the effects of varying electromagnetic field (EMF) levels on commercially exploited flatfish.
