Italian shipping company Grimaldi Group has added the 13th hybrid roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ship to its Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) fleet.
The vessel named Eco Salerno was delivered to Grimaldi on December 3, 2024, by the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China.
Like its sister vessels from the GG5G series, the Italian-flagged ship has a length of 238 meters, a beam of 34 meters, a gross tonnage of 67,311 tons, and a service speed of 20.8 knots.
The RoRo ships in this series are equipped with electronically controlled engines and an exhaust gas cleaning system to reduce sulfur and particulate emissions.
In addition, while at berth, the ships reach the “Zero emission in port” target: during port operations, the vessels use the electricity stored in mega lithium batteries with a total power of 5 MWh. These are recharged during navigation thanks to shaft generators and 350 m2 of solar panels.
So far, twelve GG5G vessels joined Grimaldi’s fleet, with the latest, Eco Italia , delivered in October 2022.
In other recent news, Grimaldi took delivery of the fifth energy-efficient multipurpose RoRo ship, Great Casablanca , from South Korean yard HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD).
The Italian company also secured a majority stake in the Heraklion Port Authority (HPA) , anticipating the port’s growth and development as estimates suggest the acquisition could expand the port’s trade capabilities and accelerate its transition toward greener operations.
