Norway-based shipping company Bergen Tankers and compatriot energy giant Equinor have executed a long-term time charter party for two oil/chemical tanker newbuilds with electric hybrid propulsion systems.
According to Bergen Tankers, the two 6,500 dwt stainless steel oil/chemical tankers will be built by Zhoushan Dashenzhou Shipbuilding in China as part of the NOR fleet, setting “a new standard for low emission at the Norwegian Coast” .
The DNV Ice-classed vessels will feature ECO design developed by Marine Design and Consulting (MDC) and tween electric hybrid CPP propulsion systems with battery package and shore power facility.
These features are expected to ensure efficiency, low power consumption, and reduced emissions.
In addition, flexible power systems on the newbuilds can be adapted to use fuels such as ammonia, methanol, biofuels, or LNG, Bergen Tankers said.
Long-term financing for the vessels has been provided by Sparebanken Vest.
Headquartered at Askøy, near Bergen, the company’s main activities are transportation and bunkering services for refined oil products, chemicals, bioproducts, and LNG.
Bergen Tankers’ main trading areas are along the Norwegian coast, in the North Sea/Continent/UK, and in the German/Danish Baltic Sea.
