Excelerate Energy celebrates 3,000th ship-to-ship LNG transfer operation

Texas-based LNG player Excelerate Energy has reached a new milestone by completing its 3,000th ship-to-ship (STS) LNG transfer operation.

The milestone operation was conducted on December 28, 2024, onboard Excelerate’s floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Excellence in Bangladesh.

Through this STS operation, the FSRU received a cargo delivery from Maran Gas Maritime’s LNG carrier, Maran Gas Asclepius, at the Moheshkhali floating LNG (MLNG) terminal located offshore Moheshkhali Island in the Bay of Bengal.

“Since pioneering the commercial ship-to-ship transfer of LNG in 2007, we have continued to shape the industry while safely and reliably bringing energy to those who need it. Commissioned in 2018, the MLNG terminal was the country’s first LNG import facility. It has a capacity of up to 600 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

FSRU Excellence and Excelerate’s second FSRU in Bangladesh are said to deliver approximately 25% of the country’s natural gas supply.

Excelerate’s 2,000th commercial STS LNG operation was also carried out at the MLNG terminal in Bangladesh in 2021.

At the beginning of 2024, the U.S. company signed a long-term agreement with Qatar’s LNG heavyweight QatarEnergy to purchase up to 1 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG.

The purchased volumes will delivered from QatarEnergy to FSRUs in Bangladesh for 15 years, starting in January 2026.
