Finnish technology group Wärtsilä is set to supply its propulsion efficiency solutions for three pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) owned by Dubai-headquartered Sallaum Lines. The solutions are expected to enhance the vessels’ performance and reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
As disclosed, Wärtsilä will provide its EnergoFlow V and fixed pitch propellers (FPP) to the carriers as part of an order that was booked by the Finnish player in the fourth quarter of 2024. Sallaum Lines reportedly selected the solutions following an analysis and modeling exercise carried out as part of Wärtsilä’s Decarbonization Program.
It is understood that the PCTC trio to be outfitted with these solutions are the 11,400 dwt Silver Queen, the 12,300 dwt Silver Sky and the 12,300 dwt Silver Moon. According to Wärtsilä, the ships are all 183 meters long with a capacity to carry 4,900 vehicles.
The company was also contracted to provide its decarbonization program to the Silver Queen and Silver Sky in October 2023, tailored to these specific vessels so that the ‘right’ solutions could be selected for “optimal sustainability.”
As explained, the FPPs are designed to deliver optimal performance and efficiency, while at the same time minimizing noise and vibration levels. As per the company, the FPPs have an ‘improved’ vessel Energy Efficiency Operating Indicator (EEOI) and Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).
The EnergoFlow—designed for the existing fleet market—is described as a pre-swirl stator that creates an ‘enhanced’ inflow for the propeller, thanks to which it is believed that it reduces fuel consumption and as well as nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
The most recent development is part of a string of joint initiatives that the two parties have engaged in in recent times. In addition to the decarbonization program selected for the Silver Queen and Silver Sky, Sallaum Lines and Wärtsilä also shook hands in April 2024.
To be precise, Wärtsilä clinched a commission to provide an array of solutions intended for slashing the carbon footprint of a sextet of PCTCs owned by the Dubai-based company.
Via its joint venture Wärtsilä Qiyao Diesel Company Ltd. (WQDC), the company was contracted to deliver three of its 20DF dual-fuel auxiliary gen-sets, operating mainly on liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel, for each of the six units .
More recently, namely in December 2024, Wärtsilä revealed that its complete propulsion package was chosen for installation on what is believed to be the world’s largest methanol-ready cement carrier .
