The HOP2 project, an initiative by Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) to demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale offshore green hydrogen production, is progressing into the next phase with a concept definition contract awarded to Aberdeen-based engineering and energy advisory consultancy Apollo.
Funded by the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Fund, the HOP2 project seeks to utilize existing oil and gas infrastructure, representing “a critical step in the transition to renewable energy, reducing emissions while repurposing legacy assets”.
Building on its work in Phase 1, Apollo was awarded the Phase 2 concept definition contract for the HOP2 project to progress the design of a 500 MW offshore hydrogen production facility, using the existing oil platform – Ninian Central Platform – substructure as a template asset.
Under the contract, Apollo will develop detailed designs for topsides, integrating systems such as electrolyzers, water treatment, and hydrogen compression; address key safety and environmental challenges to ensure compliance and sustainability; and prepare a Class 4 cost estimate and comprehensive project schedule to support future pre-FEED and FEED phases.
