Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of Finland-based technology giant Wärtsilä, is set to provide its cargo handling systems for a trio of 45,000 cbm gas carriers that are currently under construction at South Korea’s HD Hyundai Mipo.

As disclosed, two of the vessels were booked by Purus, a Singapore- and Hong Kong-based provider of maritime services for the gas transport and offshore wind industries, while the third is set to join the fleet of Istanbul-headquartered shipping player Pasco Gas.

According to Wärtsilä, the system is slated to be handed over to the yard for installation sometime in the latter part of this year.

Purus booked the gas carrier duo at HD Hyundai Mipo back in September 2024 when it was revealed that the carriers would be dual-fuel and ammonia-ready .

Scheduled for delivery in 2027, the units are expected to join the shipping company’s ammonia transport fleet that, up until this contract, comprised three 40,000 cbm vessels. As informed, four more gas carriers will join Purus’ fleet as they are gearing up to be turned over in 2025 and 2026 .

“HMD is a key customer in the medium-sized gas carrier market. Over the past decade, we have equipped more than 15 medium-sized gas carriers built by HMD. We are excited to continue with the latest project and several other ongoing ones,” Patrick Ha , Sales Manager, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, commented.

Turkish shipowner Pasco Gas booked its 45,000 cbm vessel at HD Hyundai Mipo in late 2023 when it was initially hinted that the Finnish giant would be contracted to supply its solution. This came as an option after a previous order made in February of that same year.

Wärtsilä’s cargo handling systems were reportedly designed to be “safe, dependable and environmentally friendly” as well as suitable for numerous types of vessels, from very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) to all sizes of gas carriers.

To remind, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions clinched a deal in December 2024 to supply cargo handling and fuel gas supply technology for a new 12,500 cbm liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel being built by China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering shipyard (CIMC SOE) for global energy player Vitol.

It is understood that the ship in question was booked by Vitol in mid-2024 and it will be handed over in the fourth quarter of 2026.
