Purus, a provider of maritime services for gas transport and offshore wind industries, has hailed the beginning of the construction of another medium-sized gas carrier (MGC) for ammonia transport.
According to Purus’ social media update, the steel cutting for the latest 45,000 cubic meter MGC began on February 5, 2025, at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.
Scheduled for delivery in 2026, the ammonia-ready vessel is one of four gas carriers being built for Purus at the South Korean shipyard to store and transport low-carbon gases, primarily ammonia.
In addition, in 2027, Purus anticipates delivery of another two 45,000 cbm dual-fuel ammonia-ready MGCs from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard under the shipbuilding order placed in September 2024.
The newbuilds will be equipped with an innovative cargo handling system designed for maximum flexibility and efficiency, Purus said at the time.
Once delivered, the vessels will boost the company’s ammonia transport fleet to nine units which also includes three 40,000 cbm MGCs currently in operation.
In other company-related news, Purus recently participated in what was described as the “first-ever” co-loaded ammonia and propane shipment operation from the U.S. to Europe.
