Construction of a new medium-sized gas carrier (MGC) for Purus, a provider of maritime services for the gas transport and offshore wind industries, has begun in South Korea.
The construction of the 45,000 cubic meter (cbm) vessel, which will be engaged in the storage and transportation of low-carbon gases, primarily ammonia, commenced with steel cutting ceremony on October 21 at South Korean Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.
This 190-meter-long ship is one of four 45,000 cbm MGCs set to be delivered to Purus in 2025 and 2026.
In addition, in 2027, Purus will be taking delivery of another two 45,000 cbm dual-fuel ammonia-ready MGCs from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard under the shipbuilding order placed in September this year.
The newbuilds will be equipped with an innovative cargo handling system designed for maximum flexibility and efficiency, Purus said at the time.
Once delivered, the vessels will boost Purus’ ammonia transport fleet to nine units which also includes three 40,000 cbm MGCs currently in operation.
