Norwegian companies North Ammonia and Höegh Evi have signed an agreement to explore a clean ammonia supply chain from Norway to Europe.
The agreement will see the two companies investigate opportunities to establish a value chain for supplying hydrogen to European industrial users using green ammonia produced in Norway.
The collaboration envisions leveraging Norway’s renewable energy resources that can be used to produce clean ammonia, which is a key carrier for transporting hydrogen efficiently over long distances, and exploring the technical and commercial solutions needed to facilitate the development of attractive scalable infrastructure to support further development of the market.
“Ammonia is a versatile energy vector with several end user markets currently being matured. In North Ammonia, we actively develop infrastructure for RFNBO ammonia supply to the maritime industry and with solutions from Höegh Evi we can broaden our offering and bring hydrogen to industrial users across Europe,” said Mikkel Tørud , CEO of North Ammonia.
Nils Jakob Hasle , EVP Clean Energy in Höegh Evi, added: “As Europe moves toward cleaner energy sources, hydrogen will play a crucial role in reducing emissions from hard-to-abate industries such as steel, chemicals, and heavy transport. By combining North Ammonia’s production capabilities with Höegh Evi’s expertise in marine infrastructure, we will identify the infrastructure needed to connect Norwegian renewable resources with the growing market for clean hydrogen in Europe.”
Höegh Evi is currently developing floating import terminals for hydrogen , using its ammonia-to-hydrogen cracker. One of its latest endeavors is the collaboration with the French port of Port-La Nouvelle to develop a floating terminal for hydrogen imports that will accelerate the shift to clean energy in Europe by becoming “a vital hub” for importing large volumes of hydrogen.
Meanwhile, North Ammonia is working on establishing a green ammonia production facility at Fjord Base . Fjord Base’s “significant maritime activity” and access to locally produced green fuels for shipping is expected to strengthen the company’s position as a maritime hub, while providing positive ripple effects locally in terms of job creation.
