NKT wraps up first cable installation campaign to connect oil & gas area off Norway to shore

Denmark-headquartered power cable manufacturer and installation company NKT has completed the first installation campaign in Norway to connect an offshore oil & gas development area to shore.

NKT is currently carrying out the installation of 255 kilometers of HVAC power cables to connect the Yggdrasil area to shore.

The company’s cable laying vessel (CLV) NKT Victoria, certified to run on biofuel , has completed the first installation campaign in the Norwegian fjords and in the North Sea. Once finished, the 145 kV cables will provide a stable, low-emission power supply.

The development of Yggdrasil on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) is headed by operator Aker BP with Equinor and Orlean Upstream Norway as license partners.

Estimated at over $10.3 billion, Yggdrasil consists of the Hugin, Fulla, and Munin license groups, and is located between Alvheim and Oseberg in the North Sea, containing gross resources of over 700 million barrels of oil equivalent.

The entire area will be remotely operated from an integrated operations center and control room onshore in Stavanger.

Aker BP started the construction phase in September 2023 . The new infrastructure will entail three platforms, nine subsea templates, new pipelines for oil and gas export, and power from shore.

NKT noted it had collaborated with Equinor during cable design, production, and installation.
