Norwegian energy data and intelligence company TGS has secured the rights to market and license offshore geophysical data for the offshore acreage in the Comoros, a small island country in the Indian Ocean, off the eastern coast of Africa.
The signing of an agreement with the Gouvernement de L’Union des Comores and the Bureau Géologique des Comores grants TGS the rights to market and license geophysical data related to the African nation’s offshore basins. The Norwegian firm claims that the deal reinforces its commitment to supporting the development of the Comoros’ energy sector, as its comprehensive regional data library is said to enable energy companies to evaluate exploration potential across the country’s offshore areas.
David Hajovsky , Executive Vice President of Multi-Client at TGS, commented: “This agreement deepens our partnership with the Union of the Comoros and the Bureau Géologique des Comores, giving explorers the modern seismic insight they need to evaluate this frontier with confidence.” TGS explains that the ComorosSPAN survey lies outboard of the deepwater Rovuma Basin. The data is perceived to allow the mapping of tectonic elements reflecting the deformation that has occurred along the East African margin due to offset along the Davie Fracture Zone throughout the Lower Cretaceous.
The information enables mapping of reservoir sands and modelling work to reduce the risk around source potential. With this in mind, the company claims that the available datasets are critical for companies assessing investment opportunities across various available offshore blocks.
Thanks to the agreement, the Norwegian player will offer over 10,000-line kilometers of modern SPAN 2D seismic data, providing what is considered to be essential insight into the geological framework and prospectivity of the region.
This assignment comes shortly after TGS agreed with the government of Somalia to continue to market and license offshore geophysical data for the African country’s hydrocarbon basins.
