Norwegian oil company Statoil has awarded its compatriot subsea company Ocean Installer a contract for marine operations on the Johan Castberg project in the Barents Sea.
Ocean Installer said on Thursday that the contract is significant in size and will extend the company’s operations to the Barents Sea for the first time.
Johan Castberg is among the largest subsea projects ever to be developed on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The Statoil-operated field developments spans Skrugard, Havis and Drivis, located approximately 240 km from Hammerfest and 100 km north of Snøhvit. The field sits at water depths from 360 to 405 meters.
Ocean Installer CEO, Steinar Riise , said: “We are very excited to accompany Statoil as they extend further North, and to be recognized as a trusted supplier capable of installing such a high volume and variety of subsea infrastructure.”
Riise added: “The Johan Castberg development will be one of the most significant projects on the NCS, and we are naturally very pleased to be a part of it. Our team has been working in close cooperation with Statoil on the FEED-study for Castberg since April of 2016, and to see our work pay off now is very satisfying.”
Ocean Installer noted it will be involved with Johan Castberg throughout the entire development phase, until the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is hooked up in 2022, with offshore operations in the summer seasons from 2019-2022.
The project will be managed from Ocean Installer’s Stavanger office.
The project
Statoil submitted the plan for development and operation of its Johan Castberg project to Norwegian authorities in December 2017. The field development concept includes an FPSO and a subsea development with a total of 30 wells, 10 subsea templates, and two satellite structures.
Parallel with the submission of the PDO, Statoil awarded a contract to Aker Solutions for the supply of the subsea production system and for the design of the FPSO topside. Several days later, Singapore’s Sembcorp Marine officially secured the contract to build the hull and living quarters for the Johan Castberg FPSO. The living quarters will also be designed by Aker Solutions.
In January 2018, the contract for the design, coating, fabrication and installation of a 53 km rigid flowline including 34 km of pipe-in-pipe flowline for the Johan Castberg project was awarded to Subsea 7 .
