QGEP: Atlanta field ready to start producing

Brazilian oil company QGEP has informed that first oil from its Atlanta field offshore is imminent, as the Petrojarl I FPSO has been connected to the field.

Brazilian oil company QGEP has informed that first oil from its Atlanta field offshore is imminent, as the Petrojarl I FPSO has been connected to the field.

“The activities of interconnecting the production and control lines between the wells and the FPSO have been completed at the Atlanta Field and the company confirms first oil for April, 2018,” QGEP said on Friday.

According to QGEP, daily production of up to 20,000 barrels of oil is projected after the start of the production from the two wells. Later in the year, QGEP along with its partners, will determine whether to drill a third well in the field, which is part of the early production system and could increase daily production by another 10,000 barrels of oil.

First oil from the field comes almost two years behind the original schedule. Teekay’s FPSO Petrojarl I entered into Brazilian waters on December 31, 2017, and arrived at the Atlanta Field in the late morning of January 8. The Atlanta field sits some 185 kilometers offshore Brazil.

The Petrojarl I had produced for almost 30 years in the North Sea when it was decided the FPSO would be upgraded and redeployed to Brazil on a five-year charter with QGEP.

The FPSO was supposed to start producing oil at the Atlanta field in mid-2016, however, delays with upgrade works in Damen shipyard in the Netherlands forced the operator to prolong the first oil date.

The self-propelled FPSO spent 14 months in Dock no. 8 in Rotterdam , undergoing refurbishment of its marine systems, underwater hull, seawater system, crane booms, heating coils in the cargo tanks, and specialized steelworks in the upper and lower turret areas, which needed to be completely revised and adapted to suit the 1,500 meters deep mooring location.
