First deck stacked for topside modules of Eni’s Coral FLNG

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has completed the first deck stacking operation for topsides modules of Eni’s Coral South FLNG facility at its shipyard in Geoje.

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has completed the first deck stacking operation for topsides modules of Eni’s Coral South FLNG facility at its shipyard in Geoje.

The Coral FLNG is being built for the Eni-operated Area 4 project, which is located offshore Mozambique. The project will put in production 450 billion cubic meters of gas from the giant Coral reservoir.

The contract for the Coral South FLNG project was awarded to TechnipFMC – together with JGC Corporation and Samsung Heavy Industries, all partners in the TJS Consortium where TechnipFMC is the leader – back in June 2017. TechnipFMC’s share of work covers the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, commissioning and start-up of the Coral South FLNG facility and its associated risers and subsea flowlines system, as well as the installation of the umbilicals and subsea equipment.

Construction of the mooring turret for the FLNG began in March 2018 and the first steel for the hull of the FLNG was cut in September 2018. The Coral Sul FLNG facility will have a gas liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tons per year.

The topside modules are being built in South Korea at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard. The FLNG is expected to be completed by the end of 2021 and first gas is expected in 2022.

In a social media update on Thursday, TechnipFMC said that the first deck stacking operation for topsides modules of Eni’s Coral South FLNG facility had been executed.

“The milestone was reached at our construction partner Samsung Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, earlier this month,” TechnipFMC added.

The vessel, which will be 432 meters long and 66 meters wide and weigh about 220,000 tons, will be able to house up to 350 people in its eight-storey accommodation module. The facility will be anchored at a water-depth of around 2,000 meters by means of 20 mooring lines that weigh a combined 9,000 tons.

Eni is the delegated operator for the Coral South FLNG project, the first project to monetize the world class gas resources discovered in Area 4, Mozambique. The Area 4 participants are Eni (25%), ExxonMobil (25%), CNPC (20%), Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos E.P. (10%), Kogas (10%), and Galp Energia (10%).
