Klaveness: Fifth CLEANBU newbuild launched in China

The fifth CLEANBU vessel being built for Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC), part of Norway’s shipping company Torvald Klaveness, has been launched in China.

The fifth CLEANBU vessel being built for Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC), part of Norway’s shipping company Torvald Klaveness, has been launched in China.

On 23 April, the newbuild was moved from the dock to sea and subsequently towed to the outfitting berth at New Yangzi Shipyard in China.

The vessel, to be named MV Bangus, is currently expected to be delivered to KCC in September 2020. It is the fifth of eight CLEANBU combination carriers contracted by the company.

Bangus’ sister-vessel and the fourth CLEANBU vessel, to be named MV Baleen, is planned to be delivered in July 2020.

The CLEANBUs have a deadweight of 82,500 tonnes and are both full-fledged LR1 product tankers and Kamsarmax bulk carriers transporting clean petroleum products (CPP), heavy liquid cargoes as CSS as well as all types of dry bulk products.

As explained by Klaveness, the next generation of combination carriers has an advanced vessel design, environmental performance as well as operational and technical efficiency. In the intended trading patterns, the CLEANBUs will have around 40 per cent lower CO2 emissions per ton mile transported cargo compared to standard product tankers and dry bulk vessels and meet IMO’s 2030 target of a 40 per cent reduction in carbon intensity when compared to standard vessels.

Following the delivery of MV Bangus and MV Baleen, KCC will operate a fleet of fourteen combination carriers.
