Spanish LNG terminal operator Reganosa will run and maintain a LNG regasification terminal in Tema, Ghana.
Currently under construction, the Tema LNG terminal is the first offshore LNG receiving terminal in sub-Saharan Africa, with both of its storage and regasification units floating. It is backed by Helios Investment Partners and Africa Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM).
Tema LNG Terminal Company signed the contract with Reganosa for the operation and maintainance of the storge and the floating regasification unit, as well as the associated 6 kilometres gas pipeline and a pressure reduction and metering station connected to the existing pipeline network. This will be Reganosa’s first Africa-based project.
Tema LNG’s floating regasification unit (FRU) arrived in Ghana on 7 January 2021, which will allow Tema to start delivering LNG to customers in the first quarter of 2021.
Edmund Agyeman-Duah , the project manager of TLTC, said: “Once operational, this FRU will allow the Tema LNG facility to receive, regasify, store and deliver roughly 1,7 million tonnes of LNG a year – 30 per cent of Ghana’s general capacity. Tema LNG’s year-round supply of gas will enable the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to supply reliable and cost-effective gas into the Tema power and industrial enclave, while strengthening West Africa’s energy security”.
Built by Jiangnan Shipbuilding, the purpose-built FRU, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, left the Jiangnan shipyard at the end of November last year.
