The Netherlands-based shortsea ship operator and logistics company Longship has entered a joint newbuilding project with Norway’s shipbroker Wagle Chartering for two general cargo ships.
The GS Eco-Freighter 3700 ship pair will be built by GS Yard BV in Waterhuizen.
The low-consuming general cargo ships feature single open top box shaped holds of about 181,000 cbft intake.
The vessels are equipped with two bulkheads that can be used as tweendecks. They are fitted for grain, timber, project cargoes and are driven by an IMO Tier III compliant Mitsubishi S12R engine with an output of 749 kW.
“The eco-friendly design will contribute to our group’s commitment to drastically improve our environmental impact and carbon footprint,” Longship said.
Wagle Chartering will be assigned with the commercial operation, while Longship Management BV will take care of the technical and crew management of the newbuildings.
The Dutch-flagged vessels will be named Longsun and Longsky and will enter service in the second quarter of this year, the Dutch company revealed.
Longship’s fleet currently comprises about twenty vessels, including two 6,000 dwt general cargo ships being built at Bijlsma shipyard in the Netherlands and four 8,600 dwt units under construction at Turkish Atlas Shipyard.
Back in 2020, Longship acquired 50% of Wagle Chartering, aiming to enhance its position in Scandinavia and enable active participation in the ongoing consolidation of the dry bulk shortsea market.
