AtoB@C Shipping, a Swedish subsidiary of Finland-based shipping company ESL Shipping, said that its first plug-in hybrid newbuilding Electramar reached the Baltic Sea, marking the end of a long voyage from India around the Cape of Good Hope to Europe.
The 5,400 general cargo vessel arrived in Luleå, Sweden, in mid-April.
After discharging in Luleå, the vessel will enter AtoB@C Shipping’s contract traffic in the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe.
Electramar is the first vessel in the series of twelve highly energy-efficient plug-in hybrid vessels. These vessels reduce CO 2 emissions by up to 50% compared to the present generation of vessels.
Shore power connectivity and a large battery installation are said to provide advanced fuel efficiency and the possibility to minimize noise and emissions while in port.
Electramar was delivered to AtoB@C Shipping at India’s Chowgule Shipyard in December 2023.
The second vessel in the series, Stellamar , was delivered to AtoB@C Shipping on April 5, 2024.
In related news, the company has unveiled the names of the remaining vessels in the series of plug-in hybrid vessels.
The names of the remaining six vessels, to be delivered in 2025 and 2026 continue the theme introduced with the first six vessels, where the names are derived from the nature and the characteristics of the vessels: Biomar (vessel #7), Ventumar (vessel #8), Fleximar (vessel #9), Solismar (vessel #10), Megamar (vessel #11), Luxomar (vessel #12).
The vessels are designed to carry a wide range of bulk and breakbulk products, such as steel, forest products, fertilizers and project cargoes. They have a long unobstructed deck, which allows loading more deck cargo and longer project cargoes than the current vessels in the fleet.
