Dutch companies Nordsol and Attero have officially opened their new bio-LNG production plant for the maritime industry, FirstBio2Shipping, in Wilp, the Netherlands.
Less than two years after reaching the final investment decision (FID) , the partners held the opening ceremony for the new plant on September 11 in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Máxima .
“With Nordsol’s technology, biogas producers can make real bio-LNG, not from fossil resources but directly from biogas. This bio-LNG is crucial to making hard-to-decarbonize sectors, such as long-haul transport, truly more sustainable. Moreover, local production of this energy-dense, renewable fuel from waste reduces our dependence on imported fossil fuels,” the company said in a social media statement.
The FirstBio2Shipping plant is expected to produce around 2,400 tons of bio-LNG (or liquefied biomethane) per year.
Attero will process domestic biowaste into 6 million Nm3 of biogas per year. Nordsol and Attero will jointly produce 2,400 tons of high-purity bio-LNG per year and 5,000 tons of liquid bio-CO2 per year from this biogas using Nordsol’s patented iLNG technology.
Clean fuel supplier Titan, the exclusive long-term off-taker, will supply the bio-LNG to the maritime industry where it is expected to substitute fossil fuels cost-effectively.
According to Nordsol, the produced bio-LNG will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 92% compared to conventional maritime fuel, representing more than 87500 tCO₂e net absolute emissions avoided during the first ten years of operation.
