NKT nearing finish line for its Swedish expansion project

Denmark-headquartered power cable manufacturer and installation firm NKT is nearing completion of its expansion project in Alingsås, Sweden, with access to the test hall and new buildings set for next month.

NKT announced it was expanding its operations in Alingsås to boost the production capacity of HVDC and HVAC accessories, including the construction of a new hall for testing power cable accessories up to 525 kV, an office building to accommodate the growing number of employees, and additional capacity within the existing production facilities.

The company has now reported that the expansion is nearing completion in the construction of the new high-voltage test hall and office building.

Recently, NKT also opened a new 11,000-square-metre logistics center, located near the existing facilities. “In December, we expect to get access test hall and new buildings,” said John Sjöström , VP and Site Lead of the NKT Accessories Plant in Alingsås. “The exterior is almost finished. But inside, there is still some work to be done. After we get building access, we have a big task ahead in installing all our equipment and interior. We anticipate being fully operational in the first half of 2025.”

“The new facility will expand our capabilities, and secure capacity for both standard customer flow and future R&D development needs. Innovation and being at the forefront of the market is extremely important. With increased electrification and the ongoing transition to renewables, market demands are continuously growing and evolving.”

To remind, on the back of a record order backlog and strong market outlook, NKT announced investments in a new cable-laying vessel (CLV), as well as in a new high-voltage factory on the existing site in Karlskrona, Sweden, in May 2023, with both assets expected operational from 2027.

It was reported on November 5 that the new cable extrusion tower in Karlskrona had reached its full height of 200 meters , becoming the second tallest tower in the Nordics.

Shortly after, the Danish power cable manufacturer announced that Vard had cut the first steel for the NKT Eleonora CLV.
