Qatar’s state-owned oil and gas company QatarEnergy has awarded a major engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the North Field East LNG expansion to a JV between Técnicas Reunidas and Wison.
QatarEnergy started the North Field East Projec t in 2020 to expand its LNG production. The project is to increase the production capacity from 77 million tons per annum (MTPA) to 110 MTPA m in the first phase. The second phase, called the North Field South Project, is to further boost the country’s production capacity to 126 MTPA.
On 28 April 2022, QatarEnergy marks the final milestone to deliver its North Field East LNG expansion project to boost Qatar’s LNG production capacity. The company selected a joint venture between Técnicas Reunidas (TR) and Wison Engineering as the EPC contractor.
It also awarded the JV a lump-sum contract for the expansion of the sulfur handling, storage, and loading facilities within Ras Laffan Industrial City. These facilities will support the NFE’s four new LNG trains, which are to start by year-end 2025.
In addition, the contract will include an option for further expansion to support sulfur production for the two additional LNG trains of the North Field South (NFS) project, and infrastructure to support future additional LNG trains.

The contract with the TR-Wison joint venture includes options for the NFS project as well as any future requirements for the handling, storage and loading of sulfur.”
In delivering the contract, the TR-Wison JV will manage the detailed engineering work from Qatar.
With the execution of this EPC contract, the only remaining major EPC contract for the delivery of the North Field Expansion Project is the EPC contract for the NFS two onshore processing and liquefaction trains. Currently, it is planned to be awarded by the end of 2022.
In conclusion, when completed, the NFE and NFS projects will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 MTPA today to 126 MTPA by 2027.
The North Field lies off the northeast shore of the Qatar peninsula and is one of the largest single non-associated natural gas fields in the world.
